Aber viele Vulkane sind auch prädestinierte Skiberge, denn die ebenmäßigen Flanken der Giganten bieten lange Hänge, grenzenlose Aussicht und den Reiz unberechenbarer Naturgewalten. Da Vulkane meist einsam in den Himmel ragen, treffen Wolken mit ihrer ganzen Feuchtigkeit auf die Berge. Im Winter heißt das: Es gibt satten Schneefall. Seit 2004 läuft der Skibetrieb auf der Südseite oberhalb von Nicolosi aber ohne Störungen durch Asche oder Lava. Mit den von Stardesigner Pininfarina entworfenen Sechserkabinen der wieder aufgebauten Gondelbahn schweben Skifans bis auf 2500 Meter Höhe, ein anschließender Schlepplift führt noch etwas weiter.
