Marzamemi is an ancient fishing village famous for its tonnara= tuna fishery. The small seaside town is 2 km away from Pachino, in the province of Syracuse. To reach it, you can land at Catania airport (100 km away) or at Comiso airport (75 km away). Interbus buses leave from Catania and reach Pachino. If you move by train, however, you get to Noto and from here you can take a bus. Finally, by car, you must take the Messina / Catania / Siracusa / Gela highway and exit at Noto, where the provincial road for Pachino starts. It is an evocative place with its fishing soul. Its Tonnara is one of the most important in all of Sicily, and dates back to the time of Arab domination. Several tourists have reportedly been injured as Mount Etna erupted for the third time in just under three weeks, spitting molten lava nearly 650 feet into the sky above Sicily. A BBC journalist and camera crew were caught in the huge explosion on Thursday. ‘Lava flow mixed with steam – caused huge explosion – group pelted with boiling rocks and steam,’ the BBC’s global science correspondent, Rebecca Morelle, tweeted. She reported an estimated eight people suffered head injuries, burns, cuts and bruises. ‘An amazing 78 year old lady was very close – but safely got away,’ Ms Morelle tweeted. ‘Incident could have been worse – explosions like this have killed – but seems minor injuries for now. ‘BBC team all OK – some cuts/ bruises and burns. Very shaken though – it was extremely scary. ‘Running down a mountain pelted by rocks, dodging burning boulders and boiling steam – not an experience I ever ever want to repeat,’ she added. Mount Etna has given very nice activity, and quite varied (Strombolian activity from the “saddle vent” between old and new Southeast Crater cones, sporadic emissions of brown ash from the New Southeast Crater). The lava flow has advanced not much more than 1 km from the crater and during the day was advancing slowly toward south-southwest.
The Palatine Chapel in Palermo (Cappella Palatina) Commenced by Roger II and consecrated in 1140. The Chapel is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Palatine Chapel is the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Kingdom of Sicily situated on the first floor at the center of the Norman Palace in Palermo. The chapel is a great symbol of multi-cultural cooperation. Craftsmen of three different religious traditions worked alongside each other. The madonna below Christ Pantocrator is an addition from the 18th century. Originally there was a window there. The Palatine Chapel, consecrated on Palm Sunday, 28 April, 1140, is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The mosaics in the Palatine Chapel were probably made by the same craftsmen that made the mosaics in the Martorana and the central apse of the Cathedral in Cefalù. The wooden ceiling of star-shaped panels, carved and painted by 12th century craftsmen from Maghreb.
