Sicily Carnival

Carnival in Sicily, as in many other parts of the world, means happiness. Masks, confetti and streamers are everywhere together with a lot of music. Almost every town organizes something for carnival. But where is the best carnival in Sicily ? There are many towns which assert that they have the best or the oldest carnival in Sicily. However, three towns celebrate carnival wiht special events. They are Acireale, near Catania, also famous for its baroque architecture, Sciacca, near Agrigento, famous for its thermal baths and Termini Imerese, another town famous for thermal baths, near Palermo. The Carnival in Sicily has ancient origins. It is the feast of abundance and binge eating before Lent fasting. This is the week of the year when delicious gravies and rich dishes are served at our tables; macaroni, cavateddi (a type of pasta) with meat sauce and pork rind, the traditional fat Thursday soup, typical of Modica County, and a lot of sweets as the Turkish’s heads of Scicli, the pignolata of Messina and the delicious chiacchere, strips of sweet pastry dough fried and coated with powdered sugar. Sizilien Karneval

Wollen Sie Karneval einmal etwas anders erleben? Ohne zu frieren und mit ganz viel Sonne? Ausgelassen mit den lebenslustigsten Menschen auf der Straße tanzen? Dann kommen Sie zum Fasching in Sizilien! So wie in vielen anderen Orten der Welt wird auch in Sizilien der Karneval mit grosser Fröhlichkeit gefeiert. Die Strassen füllen sich mit bunten Farben, Masken, Konfetti und Papierschlangen. Mehrere Tage lang gibt es Umzüge mit Karren aus Pappe und thematischen Maskengruppen. In vielen Orten werden Umzüge und Veranstaltungen organisiert. Die schönsten Karneval-Feiern in Sizilien findet man in verschiedenen Städten. Jede meint natürlich, sie hätte den schönsten oder den ältesten Karneval der Insel. Auf jeden fall, drei Städte bieten besonders schöne Feiern mit Kostümen, Karren und Musik. Es sind Acireale, eine barock Stadt in der nähe von Catania, Sciacca, eine Thermen-Stadt bei Agrigent und Termini Imerese, noch eine Thermen-Stadt in der nähe von Palermo. ÄTNA-SKI Vulkane für Skifahrer: Brettern, wo es brodelt Mordsabfahrten und Schneevergnügen am Ätna: hier führen Skipisten die Flanken vom Vulkan hinab. Das Wort Vulkan weckt Assoziationen an glühende Lava, Feuerfontänen und fliegende Felstrümmer. Aber viele Vulkane sind auch prädestinierte Skiberge, denn die ebenmäßigen Flanken der Giganten bieten lange Hänge, grenzenlose Aussicht und den Reiz unberechenbarer Naturgewalten. Da Vulkane meist einsam in den Himmel ragen, treffen Wolken mit ihrer ganzen Feuchtigkeit auf die Berge. Im Winter heißt das: Es gibt satten Schneefall. Sizilien bietet wunderschöne Feuerhänge zum Skifahren am Ätna. Der Ätna ist mit 3340 Metern der höchste aktive Vulkan Europas. Seit den vierziger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts wird an den sanften Flanken des rastlosen Riesen Ski gefahren – mit eruptionsbedingten Unterbrechungen. Seit 2004 läuft der Skibetrieb auf der Südseite oberhalb von Nicolosi aber ohne Störungen durch Asche oder Lava. Mit den von Stardesigner Pininfarina entworfenen Sechserkabinen der wieder aufgebauten Gondelbahn schweben Skifans bis auf 2500 Meter Höhe, ein anschließender Schlepplift führt noch etwas weiter. Die Kulisse sucht ihresgleichen: azurblaues Meer, saftig grüne Orangenhaine und als Krönung das rauchende Haupt des Ätna. Sicily skiing on an active volcano: ETNA!

There are a lot of ways to enjoy Mt. Etna, but one of the most surprising is skiing on it. While Europe’s largest active volcano is commonly known for its role in Greek mythology and unpredictable eruptions, few realize it has ski resorts, too. Sure, Mount Etna’s slopes may not be as expansive and exciting as those in northern Italy. But skiing on a volcano, with a view of the sea, makes this the most unique experience of skiing in Italy. There are two distinct ski areas on Mount Etna. The southern one ends in Nicolosi, known here as Mount Etna Nicolosi. It covers more ground and is slightly higher with more vertical pistes than the northern resort. There are 4 lifts to service 14 groomed trails. The northern resort is Piano Provenzana above the village of Linguaglossa. The terrain is suitable for all levels and offers both alpine and downhill slopes. The trails tend to be very smooth, thanks to the volcano’s settled lava! Better yet, crowds tend to be small, and at about 25 euro per day, ski passes cost much less than those in the north. The nearest airport to Mount Etna Nicolosi is Catania.

Sicily events: Stromboli’s eruptive explosions

The fascinating sensation of standing on an active volcano is redoubled in this extraordinary place by the occurrence of the scatti (literally, outbursts), the word used in the local language to indicate the most violent explosions inside the crater. The vents are located on the Sciara del Fuoco, a massive wall of volcanic débris which descends very steeply to the sea and has a rocky ridge on either side. On the slopes of the volcano (924 m; 3,031 ft), which end in high cliffs alternating here and there with small beaches, grow date-palms, vines, and prickly pears; on the volcano’s upper slopes, from about halfway up, the Mediterranean maquis begins to thin out and eventually disappears. The towns of Stromboli and Ginostra have been inhabited since the remote past, and the remains of a Greek necropolis (4th and 3rd c. bc) have been discovered, the graves containing sarcophaguses of volcanic stone, coins, decorated pots and terracotta ware featuring theatrical themes.
