Acitrezza is a lively seaside resort with good facilities as well as being a fishing village. It stands on the Ionian coast between Acireale and Catania. The village was the setting for the tragic events in the lives of the Malavoglia family in Giovanni Verga’s novel I Malavoglia (originally translated into English as ‘The House by the Medlar Tree’).
Legend has it that the enchanting Islands of the Cyclopses, as the basaltic rocks rising out of the sea not far from the beach here are called, were hurled into the sea by the blinded giant Polyphemus in his pursuit of Ulysses. On the biggest of the islands, Aci, there is a marine biology and physics study outpost belonging to the University of Catania.
